10 practitioner tips for a peaceful summer
We all need a break, but as we know, our smartphones keep us connected. They are a constant reminder of things that need to be done. So, how can we really get away from it all?
Here are our top ten tips that help us take valuable rest and recharge our batteries:
Be present. A quick look at your phone takes you out of the moment. Don’t give in to temptation. Be present in every moment; your family will thank you.
Stay alert. This is not the same as being connected. Outline the circumstances you wish to be contacted and choose the communication method, making sure it will not drag you back into work mode.
Don’t dwell on work. How often has someone told you to think about a problem whilst on leave? Don’t! Look at things with a refreshed mind on your return.
Allocate work. During busy holiday periods, team members are in and out of the business. It can disrupt ongoing projects if roles are not allocated with clear deliverables. Make everyone accountable for their delivery and ensure robust handovers.
Things will go wrong. Before busy holiday periods, do a quick risk assessment with the team and scenario plan what can go wrong. Build a playbook, allocate roles and let those responsible manage it.
Trust your team. If you worry that things will not be delivered without you being there, you may need to look closely at the processes.
Manage expectations. Tell your peers that you’re going to be away. Share the roster with them, explain what will be delivered in your absence and tell them whom to contact if things don’t go to plan.
Be ready. If a crisis strikes, you need to be prepared to step in. Ensure your team can handle the initial response whilst you return. Summarise your crisis plan into a checklist and take it as part of your essential travel documents.
Lead by example. Follow these steps and encourage your team to do the same. We all need a break. We will be sharper and better practitioners because of it!
Do an audit. If you’re reading this on your holiday and things are whirling around in your mind, we can help you audit your communications readiness when you get back from leave and help you prepare before the next holiday season.
